Picture Framing in Penrith: Your Questions Answered
Framing is one of those things that feels simple, until you’re stood holding a print, a painting, a medal, or a shirt and thinking: Where do I even start?
At Purdon & Co, we’re picture framing specialists based on King Street in Penrith and we get this question and more, every day. So we’ve pulled together a straightforward guide to help you understand costs, timescales, glass options and what to expect when you bring something in.
The quickest way to get the right frame
Because framing is (by its very nature) visual, the best way for us to help is to see your piece in person. If you can, pop into the shop with the item you’d like framed and we’ll talk you through frame, mount and glass options, then give you a no-obligation quote.
If your piece is unusual (3D items, textiles, very large pieces, or anything delicate) it’s worth giving us a quick call first so we can make sure the right expert is on hand to advise.
How much does it cost to frame a picture?
This is the big one, and the honest answer is: it depends.
The cost of framing is influenced by a few things:
· The size of the piece
· The style and type of moulding (frame)
· Whether it needs a mount (and how it’s mounted)
· The type of glazing (glass) you choose
Glazing in particular can make a big difference to the final price, especially if you’re choosing UV-protective or specialist glass.
We’ve got a wide range to suit different styles and budgets, and we use a computerised pricing system so we can quote accurately. When you bring your artwork in, we’ll chat through options, so you leave knowing exactly what it will cost.
How long does framing take?
We generally aim to have your picture ready to collect within 5–10 working days.
If you need your frame for a deadline (a gift, an event, a last-minute “I need it ASAP”), let us know. We can often work to a tighter timescale and we will always be honest about what’s possible.
What type of glass do you use (and do you replace broken glass)?
Yes, we replace broken glass and we can cut glass to any size, including jumbo.
We stock the following as standard:
· Float glass
· Artglass
· Mirror glass
We can also source:
· Acrylic
· Antique glass
If you’re not sure what you need, don’t worry. We’ll recommend the right option based on where the piece will hang, taking into consideration light levels, how valuable or sentimental it is and the level of protection you want.
Do you offer restoration?
We do.
Our restoration service includes (but isn’t limited to):
· Photo editing and re-touching
· Re-printing
· Frame restoration and repair
If you’ve got something that’s been damaged, faded, or just needs a bit of careful attention, get in touch and our experienced restoration team can advise. We can also advise on more complex restoration projects.
Do you frame medals and memorabilia?
Yes, we frame a wide range of memorabilia, including:
· Medals
· Needlework and textiles
· Sports shirts
If it matters to you, we’ll help you display it properly and protect it for the long run.
Do you frame needlework?
We do, and we’ve got lots of experience with it.
We can also stretch needlework for you and recommend the best way to preserve it, so it stays in great condition over time.
Can you stretch a canvas?
Yes, we can stretch canvases, frame them and replace broken or damaged ones too.
Do you offer photo or canvas printing?
Yes we do. Give us a call or pop into the shop and we’ll talk you through the options available.
How much does it cost to frame a shirt?
There are a lot of variables when it comes to framing a shirt: size, frame style, glass choice and whether you’re including other items (tickets, photos, badges, programmes and so on).
As a very rough guide, you could be looking at around £220 upwards.
The best thing to do is bring the shirt, and anything you’d like included, into the shop and we’ll quote based on exactly what you want.
Can you match a particular moulding?
Yes. If you’ve got a frame you’re trying to match, we have a wide range of sustainably sourced mouldings in-house.
As long as the moulding is still being produced, we’ll do our best to match it. We also hand finish frames to order.
Do I need an appointment (and can I visit outside opening hours)?
You’re welcome to call in any time during our opening hours.
Appointments aren’t necessary, but if you’d prefer one, just give us a ring and we’ll arrange it.
And if it’s absolutely necessary, we can sometimes offer appointments outside normal opening hours. Please call and we’ll do our best to help.
Will my pictures be ready to hang?
Yes.
All our frames come taped and ready to hang, with the appropriate fixings attached as standard. If you need a different style of fixing or a stand, just let us know when you place your order.
Can the picture have a stand instead of being strung?
Yes, we have several stand options for many sizes of frame.
There are some size limitations, but we’re always happy to advise on the best solution.
What’s the biggest frame you can do?
We’ve got lots of experience handling large frames and images, and larger pieces can be accommodated.
If you’ve got something big (or awkward), contact us or call in and we’ll talk it through.
I have a valuable painting - will it be safe, and are you insured?
Yes. We carefully store all artwork, and we are fully insured.
What materials do you use (and are the frames eco-friendly)?
We offer as many sustainably sourced wooden mouldings as we can, through suppliers with a wide range of FSC® certified products.
Any plastic mouldings we use come from a supplier using recycled polystyrene.
Our mount board range is also FSC approved, conservation level, and locally sourced.
If you’d like the full details, you can read our Environmental Statement.
Do you deliver?
Local deliveries are possible if the framed piece is too large to collect.
For further afield, we use a local courier service. Please contact us to discuss what you need and we’ll advise on the best option.
Ready to chat it through?
If you can, the best next step is to bring your piece into the shop so we can help you choose the perfect frame.
We look forward to welcoming you and helping you choose the perfect frame for your piece.
